Went out to buy a Mountain Shirt purchased the Explorer. Why? Outer fabrics feels very supple relative to the Mountain Shirt and the lack of storm flaps on the neck and side zips make using them less hassle, providing a more refined look to the shirt in all reality. I’ve not found the lack of these to compromise the jacket in anyway. If the jacket is going to get a soaking it still performs like a Buffalo (or like my old Buffalo parka if being specific). The cut of the jacket feels exactly like the mountain shirt so if looking for the greater coverage of a special 6 I am not sure you’ll find it here. However I feel the explorer is a more modern take on the mountain shirt, and with Buffalo Systems looking to incorporate eco materials into the range why not start the OG as the base. I love it and cannot wait for weather to get a little UK winter like. Dog walks, hill walking, post trail run warm ups. Like all Buffalo stuff it’s made for UK conditions, does what it does and does it superbly well.
I have used buffalo kIt for years when cycling from the purple and yellow cycle shirt in the mid 80’s to a newer one in the early 2000’s cracking kit still to this day.
Confession time for the last few years I have been using Duck Down jackets which whilst nice are a pain to look after and a disaster when wet but we digress.
I decided to return to Buffalo and this summer I bought the explorer shirt ( far too hot only tried on for fit) the cut is lovely not baggy, not tight and not restrictive in any way. Here in the Dordogne its been -7 this week beautiful dog walking weather and despite my wife’s protest about using the shirt against my skin I have been so toasty but never sweaty the wife now wants a buffalo which says it all really.
I have added a DP hood to the shirt which did not work for me and my wife put a 1″ dart horizontally across the back of it and its a permanent fixture to the shirt which in the wind just makes life so comfortable.
With a paitr of Special 6 trousers the weather has no fears for me.
